Governors

Each Governor has individual areas of focus that are reflective of their skills. We visit school regularly and act as a critical friend both to challenge and champion the school. Our questions and observations provide rigorous and ongoing review; an essential part of our role. The day to day operation of the school is led by our Headteacher, Mrs Ruff and our staff team, however Governors have a range of responsibilities including setting and monitoring the budget and overseeing the curriculum, safeguarding, standards of behaviour and health & safety

The Governing Body meet regularly as a Full Governing Body, where as well as dealing with the regular business of the school, we receive training, updates, briefings and reports on current matters of interest within school and the wider education system. To work effectively, the Governing Body has two main sub-committees Pupil Outcomes and Resources whose responsibilities include reporting back to all governors at the Full Governing Body meetings.

It is important Governors have the skills and knowledge to effectively undertake their roles. The Governing Body are committed to attending specific courses arranged through the Local Authority Governor Development Services Training Programme. Courses are delivered through a range of approaches including online, one day courses or short 2 hour evening sessions. This range ensures training is accessible to everyone including those that have a small amount of time to commit, but are still keen to share they unique expertise with school. Courses also provide Governors with valuable opportunities to meet with Governors from other schools to share best practice. We are also part of the Bosworth Education Partnership and members of Forest Way Teaching Alliance.

Governors normally serve a period of office of 4 years. The Chair, Vice Chair and Chairs of sub committees are elected every year. People can serve for shorter periods, where they may have a particular skill that could help the school in the short term to achieve a particular task or outcome. An example may be generating funding to enable the school to complete the community build development. Equally you may come from an educational background and have particular skills in specific subject areas.

Being a Governor is both challenging and rewarding and a great way to use your time and skills to make a difference. The perception that a lot of time is needed to commit as a governor is not true. It is sometimes believed you must understand the educational system or be an ex teacher. This is also a myth!

An effective Governing body has a mix of backgrounds and skills.

At Congerstone we continuously review our school needs and seek to identify transferable skills that will help school achieve its best possible outcomes. We have a range of skills and expertise in our Governing Body, but are always looking to grow and strengthen our team. We truly believe that to enable our school to achieve its best it is important we all take a sense of ownership. It is great to share good news and encouragement with our hardworking staff team, but equally it is important to hear your concerns and issues so we can improve the school further.
